Writing SinhalaThe characters used to write sinhala and found all over the place in Sri Lanka are looking pretty smooth and extraordinary. Over here we will see how to write this nice symbols. 2. Looong Vocals ( ![]() ) Additionally to changing the ending of a syllab with a "short" vocal, it is also possible to have a long vocal at the end of the sysllab. So instead of "ma" we will get "maa", instead of "me" we get "mee". If you want to change from a short vocal "ma" to a long one, we need a small semicircle to be attached to the syllab. ="ma" changes to ="maa".
Like you might already assume, this is also possible with the other vocals. So let's see what we have to do to change for long vocals. An "ii" is created by adding a cirle to the loop on top of the sign : =mi => = mii
An "uu" is created by adding a wave to the bottom stroke : =mu => = muu
An "ee" gets an additional bow at the top =me
=> = mee. This bow looks similar to the one you find in "i", but be aware that this are two different types to modify a syllab.
An "oo" is created by adding a small "flag" on top of the semicircle : =mo => = moo
Using this additional rules we are already capable of writing ten different versions of our "ma" syllab. Impressive, isn't it ? To make it easier to see how the signs are built, we show them in a more detailed view : =ma =mi =mu =me =mo
=maa =mii =muu =mee =moo
Especially the difference between the bow on the "mii" and the "mee" should be seen. |
